Lemkau, de la Universidad de Johns Hopkins. La higiene mental nació como materia de estudio en los Estados Unidos, donde se cultis ampilamente, vinculada y subordinada a la sanidad pública, y es una disciplina que suscita la atención de todos los pueblos cultos:\nEl profesor Lemkau divide su obra en dos partes. En la primera estudie la higiene mental como rama de la sanidad pública, las diversas instituciones que cooperan en sus servicios, la estructuración administrativa, métodos y problemas. En la segunda, más amplia, describe el desarrollo de! individuo, pues el autor no ha partido del objeto sino del sujeto; esto es, a diferencia de otros autores, no dedica sus capítulos a la higiene mental en el hogar, en la escuela, en la industria, sino que toma al individuo desde antes del nacimiento y lo sigue en sucesivas etapas cronológicas: lactancia, infancia, adolescencia, juventud, madurez y ancianidad, para exponer las normas que deben seguirse en cada una de ellas. Esto ofrece la ventaja de que no se descuida ningún aspecto, pues, por ejemplo, los problemas que el trabajo presenta a la higiene mental varían en la adoles-cencia, en el hombre maduro y en el anciano.
