Despite his aristocratic upbringing, Gallitzin was drawn to a life of service and adventure. Inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment and the example of his close friend Franz Xaver von Zwack, Gallitzin decided to leave his homeland and travel to America. He arrived in Baltimore in 1795 and was ordained a priest two years later. Gallitzin's first assignment was to minister to the German Catholic immigrants who were settling in western Pennsylvania. He traveled extensively throughout the region, often on foot or horseback, establishing churches and schools and providing spiritual guidance to his flock. Gallitzin's work was not without its challenges. He faced opposition from both Protestants and anti-Catholic nativists. He also struggled with loneliness and the harsh conditions of frontier life. But through it all, he remained steadfast in his faith and his commitment to his people. Over time, Gallitzin's reputation as a holy man and a tireless worker spread throughout the region. He became known as the "Apostle of the Alleghenies" and was revered by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Gallitzin's story is a testament to the power of faith and the importance of following one's dreams.
