Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Renowned physician Dr Benjamin Travers was granted the rare opportunity of observing a wide swath of diseases over decades in Northern Russia. He skillfully chronicles his observations, identifying the essential role of the nervous system in every aspect of human physiology, from feeding ourselves to controlling body temperature. Travers advances thought from the dominant humorism of his era, towards an enlightened thesis regarding nervous influence on the blood, with far-reaching implications for medical science. Through a detailed exploration of topics such as respiration, muscular motion, sleep and sensory perception, the author presents a coherent theory of vital processes, offering an authoritative and enduring text for medical students and professionals alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Covers are heavily rubbed and mottled, with spotting, scuffing, bumped corners, and general shelfwear. Spine ends are chipped and frayed, with cloth loss at head and foot; lower spine shows an area of old label or surface loss. Binding remains intact, though showing age and wear. Interior is better preserved than the exterior, with scattered foxing, age-toning, and occasional staining, especially to endpapers and preliminary leaves. Title page remains readable and attractive. Printed dedication leaf to Benjamin Travers, Esq., F.R.S., dated London, October 1844. A sound, usable copy overall, with exterior wear as the main condition issue. Sir George Lefevre's work presents a mid-nineteenth-century discussion of the nervous system and its influence on health and disease, written for a general educated readership rather than as a narrow specialist text. An interesting early Victorian medical title touching on nerves, nervous influence, disease, physiology, and the developing popular understanding of nervous disorders.
