Format in-8°( 24,5 x 16 cm )( 508 gr ). -------- X-249 pages + 8 planches Hors-Texte . ***************** '' L abbaye de Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, qui fête cette année le 1 200e anniversaire de sa fondation par le duc Guillaume, le… héros du cycle de chansons de gestes qui porte son nom, a laissé un livre du chapitre écrit dans la première moitié du XIIIe siècle, aujourd hui conservé à la médiathèque centrale Emile Zola de l Agglomération de Montpellier (Ms. 13). Composé selon l usage d un martyrologe abrégé (Adon de la première famille), de la règle de saint Benoît, des capitules de prime et d un nécrologe, ce manuscrit dérive du livre de prime exécuté sans doute au XIe siècle, encore conservé à l abbaye au XVIIe siècle et consulté alors par les mauristes. Dans la présente édition sont publiés les deux textes originaux : l abrégé du martyrologe d Adon, avec ses auctaria, et le nécrologe, qui a subi beaucoup de grattages à l époque moderne. Il s agit du dernier nécrologe d une abbaye languedocienne resté jusqu alors inédit. Le texte fait la part belle aux religieux de l abbaye, mais aussi à ceux de Sauve, prieuré de Saint-Guilhem qui acquiert son autonomie en 1267. Fait exceptionnel, le rédacteur s est attaché à préciser la qualité de prêtre des religieux qui avaient reçu les ordres majeurs. Après une certaine désaffection à la fin du Moyen Âge, le nécrologe reçoit un bon nombre d obits de religieux, entre 1542 et 1675, mais seuls deux mauristes y ont été inscrits, alors que la Congrégation de Saint-Maur prit effectivement possession des lieux en 1644. Les treize chartreuses « provençales » qu'étudie cet ouvrage n'avaient pourtant fait jusqu'ici l'objet que de monographies érudites, aux perspec…tives souvent limitées à la seule histoire des temporels. Ils proposent ici une reconstitution globale dc la vie et de la spiritualité des chartreux « provençaux » du XII' siècle à nos jours. vues à travers leurs textes norrnatfs, leurs écrits. mais aussi le contenu de leurs bibliothèques et surtout l'architecture de leurs monastères et les oeuvres d' art qui furent je support de leurs prières et de leur méditation, en particulier le célebre Couronnement de la Vierge, aujourd'hui conservé au musée de Villeneuve d'Avignon. Par-delà les biographies -- d'illeurs signifcatives -- de quelques chartreux d'exception. on trouvera également réunis les éléments d'une démographie et d'une économie des chartreues et définis les rapports complexes qu'ont entretenus avec le siècle ces moines qui poursuivent une expérience d' érémitisme et d'ascétisme sans autre équivalent dans la chrétienté latine.
