Patterns of the Past: Interpreting Ontario's History was published by Dundurn Press of Toronto in 1988, issued simultaneously in hardcover and paperback, with ISBNs 1-55002-035-8 and 1-55002-034-X respectively. It was produced to commemorate the centenary of the Ontario Historical Society, which was organized in September 1888 as the Pioneer Association of Ontario and adopted its current name a decade later. The volume carries an introduction by Ian Wilson, then Archivist of Ontario, and was edited by Roger Hall, William Westfall, and Laurel Sefton MacDowell, with Freya Godard serving as co-ordinating editor. At the time of publication, Hall was in the History Department at the University of Western Ontario, Westfall was Chair of History at Atkinson College, York University, and MacDowell was at Erindale College, University of Toronto. The volume brings together eighteen scholars to produce fresh interpretive essays ranging across the full scope of Ontario's history. The subject range is genuinely broad.
