Corrado Leoni è un autore sensibile e sceglie sempre con cura le tematiche che propone nelle sue opere. La sua scrittura è limpida e onesta e nasce dall'esigenza di trasme…ttere conoscenza attraverso le esperienze dei suoi personaggi, inseriti in un contesto storico e sociale ben definito. Dopo aver ripercorso nel romanzo La mulatta - Il riscatto gli orrori (troppo spesso passati sotto silenzio) del colonialismo italiano in Africa nel periodo fascista, Leoni ha narrato un altro momento importante e drammatico della storia del nostro paese, quello della Resistenza in Partigiani non santi ma combattenti. Nelle opere sopraccitate, l'autore ha descritto bene come il vissuto di persone comuni si intreccia con eventi di portata epocale, mettendo in risalto l'importanza dell'azione virtuosa anche di un singolo individuo per il bene di un altro e della collettività, in generale. In Meravigliarsi. - La vita delle api, si cimenta con un genere un po' diverso, dipingendo il ciclo di vita di un'ape regina all'interno di un alveare. La forma ricorda quella delle favole: l'ape regina dialoga con le operaie e le bottinatrici, dando loro istruzioni e lodandole per l'aiuto fornito. Quella delle api è una piccola società in cui ciascuno ha un compito ben preciso e nessuno agisce per conto proprio, trascurando l'interesse comune. Assolvere ai propri doveri comporta dei sacrifici, ma mantiene intatto l'equilibrio necessario a garantire l'armonia tra i membri della comunità. L'autore non si limita a fornire, seppure in una veste semplice e accattivante, informazioni su queste affascinanti creature, ma trasmette anche un messaggio più profondo che riguarda noi esseri umani. L'egoismo e la mancanza di cura nei confronti degli altri non promuovono il benessere collettivo, e quella dell'alveare, oltre a essere una realtà concreta, è anche l'immagine simbolica di una società ideale, il cui equilibrio si regge sulla cooperazione e sulla capacità di abnegazione. Il racconto è preceduto da un dialogo suggestivo tra l'autore e l'apicoltore Tonino, in cui sono svelate le delicate interazioni tra il regno delle api e la natura circostante, e come l'apicoltura possa agevolare in qualche modo la sopravvivenza di questi insetti. Leoni concilia divulgazione e intrattenimento e cerca di rivolgersi a una platea di lettori più vasta possibile, dai bambini, che potranno apprezzare tra l'altro i disegni di Laura Luisa Leoni che corredano il racconto, agli adulti, per offrire loro degli spunti di riflessione sul rapporto uomo-natura.
