Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition of this interesting long poem by a 19th century rural Maryland minister in which he strives to portray the psyche of the peoples of the American South in the post Civil War, post Reconstruction era. Presented as a journey into the "New South" in a self-described "Frolic… of Fantasy with fact." Of particular interest is his sympathetic portrait of African Americans who are visited an animated religious gathering. The section excessively uses period, stereotypical dialect for African American speakers, one of whom is a highly regarded preacher who speaks at length. Although the author appears sympathetic to African Americans, he also, perhaps unwittingly, projects patronizing and paternalistic attitudes. The poem also includes interesting and rather strong reaction to the assassination of President James Garfield, an incident addressed in encounters with both white Southerns and African Americans. The reaction among African Americans is interesting in that the incident is closely connected with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Gold cloth, 148 pages. Some soiling of covers, several pages dog-eared.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of the author's travels through the South during the reconstruction era after the Civil War. Having lived through the conflict on the opposing side, the author presents a unique and nuanced perspective on the complexities of the period, including the joy and r…econciliation celebrated on Independence Day, and the somber grief of a nation mourning the assassination of its President. Through conversations with locals and detailed descriptions of events and settings, the author weaves a compelling narrative that brings to life the challenges and aspirations of both the white Southerners and the emancipated African Americans. Ultimately, this book provides a valuable and thought-provoking account of a transformative chapter in American history, exploring the delicate balance between remembrance and reconciliation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
