German colonialism: race, the Holocaust, and postwar Germany. New York: Columbia University Press, 2011, 1st printing number line ending in 1, xxxi, 327pp., . More than half a century before the mass…executions of the Holocaust, Germany devastated the peoples of southwestern Africa. While colonialism might seem marginal to German history, new scholarship compares these acts to Nazi practices on the Eastern and Western fronts. With some of the most important essays from the past five years exploring the "continuity thesis," this anthology debates the links between German colonialist activities and the behavior of Germany during World War II. Some contributors argue the country's domination of southwestern Africa gave rise to perceptions of racial difference and superiority at home, building upon a nascent nationalism that blossomed into National Socialism and the Holocaust. Others remain skeptical and challenge the continuity thesis. The contributors also examine Germany's colonial past with debates over the country's identity and history and compare its colonial crimes with other European ventures. Other issues explored include the denial or marginalization of German genocide and the place of colonialism and the Holocaust within German and Israeli postwar relations. - CONTENTS: Introduction: Reconfiguring German colonialism / Volker Langbehn and Mohammad Salama -- pt. 1. Colonial (dis)continuities : framing the issue -- Borrowed light : Nietzsche and the colonies / Timothy Brennan -- German colonialism : some reflections on reassessments, specificities, and constellations / Birthe Kundrus -- pt. 2. Lebensraum and genocide -- Against "human diversity as such" : Lebensraum and genocide in the Third Reich / Shelley Baranowski -- Hannah Arendt, imperialisms, and the Holocaust / A. Dirk Moses -- Caesura, continuity, and myth : the stakes of tethering the Holocaust to German colonial theory / Kitty Millet -- pt. 3. Looking East : Poland, the Ottoman Empire, and politicized Jihadism -- Germany's adventures in the Orient : a history of ambivalent semicolonial entanglements / Malte Fuhrmann -- Arguing the case for a colonial Poland / Kristin Kopp -- Colonialism, and no end : the other continuity theses / Russell A. Berman -- pt. 4. Of missionaries, economics, and intranational self-perception -- The purpose of German colonialism, or, The long shadow of Bismarck's colonial policy / Hartmut Pogge von Strandmann -- Christian missionary societies in the German colonies, 1884/85-1914/15 / Ulrich van der Heyden -- German colonialism and the British neighbor in Africa before 1914 : self-definitions, lines of demarcation, and cooperation / Ulrike Lindner -- pt. 5. Paperback. Condition: New. The first comprehensive study in English of Schmidt's famous and controversial novel.Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) is considered one of the most daring and influential writers of postwar Germany; the Germanist Jeremy Adler has called him a "giant of postwar German literature." Schmidt was awarded the Fontan…e Prize in 1964 and the Goethe Prize in 1973, and his early fiction has been translated into English to high critical acclaim, but he is not a well-known figure in the English-speaking world, where his complex work remains at the margins of critical inquiry. Volker Langbehn's book introduces Schmidt to the English-speaking audience, with primary emphasis on his most famous novel, Zettel's Traum. One reviewer called the book an "elephantine monster" because of its unconventional size (folio format), length (1334 pages and over 10 million characters), and unique presentation of text in the form of notes, typewritten pages, parallel columns, and collages. The novel narrates the life of themain characters, Daniel Pagenstecher, Paul Jacobi and his wife Wilma, and their teenage daughter Franziska. In discussing the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe, the four engage in the problems connected with a translation of Poe.Langbehn's study investigates how literary language can mediate or account for the world of experiences and for concepts. Schmidt's use of unconventional presentation formats challenges us to analyze how we think about reading and writing literary texts. Instead of viewing such texts as a representation of reality, Schmidt's novel destabilizes this unquestioned mode of representation, posing a radical challenge to what contemporary literary criticism defines as literature. No comprehensive study of Zettel's Traum exists in English. Volker Langbehn is professor of German at San Francisco State University.
