Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of ancient Indian linguistics, offering a critical edition and the first-ever English translation of two foundational texts: the Nighantu, a collection of Vedic words, and the Nirukta, an etymological treatise. It explores the intricate relationship between these works, shedding light on their historical development and textual variations. Dating back to a period when knowledge of the Vedas was fading, this book examines the efforts of ancient scholars to preserve and interpret these sacred texts. The author meticulously analyzes the Nighantu and the Nirukta, revealing the methods used by early Indian linguists to decipher the meanings of Vedic words and unravel their etymological roots. The analysis extends to comparisons with the etymological approaches of ancient Greek thinkers like Plato and Aristotle, highlighting the sophistication of Indian linguistic thought. This book not only provides valuable insights into the history of linguistics but also offers a deeper understanding of the intellectual and cultural milieu of ancient India. It explores early skepticism towards the Vedas and the responses it evoked, revealing the dynamic interplay between tradition and critical inquiry. The book concludes by emphasizing the enduring relevance of these ancient texts, demonstrating their contribution to the fields of etymology, philology, and semantics, and their lasting impact on our understanding of language and its origins. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
