As the wife of Sir James John…Hamilton, Baronet (1802-1876), Lady Augusta Hamilton may well have traveled with her husband during his ample and active military service, but for this study she also "collected from the labors of enlightened travelers and navigators," as she writes in her preface, including Lady Mary Wortley Montague in Turkey and Lewis and Clark in North America. This 1824 printing comes illustrated in a copperplate engraved frontispiece of the "Spanish Custom of Serenading" and a title page vignette of a "Marriage Ceremony in Mexico"-extra-illustrated with an 1877 newspaper comic depicting an elderly couple at the altar by Sir John Gilbert and the text "Never too late to mend," pasted in by a previous owner, who also added the author's name in newspaper clippings to the anonymous title page and merely initialed preface, as well as occasional hand-annotations to the text, including a couple of quotes from other works such as John Lubbock's Origin of Civilisation and the Primitive Condition of Man (1867). This is a presentable 1824 edition of a fascinating proto-feminist tour of the world through marriage ceremonies, with clues to its reception left by a later 19th century reader. Halfbound in calfskin, decoratively gilt-stamped to spine and lettered in gilt over a red leather title label, with marbled paper over boards and matching marbled edges. Rather heavy wear to binding, with hard rubbing and ringstains to boards, corners bumped and split, with boards exposed, chipping to head and tial of spine, and wear to exterior hinges. Inner hinges cracked at gutters of endpapers; binding remains quite firm and sound and text block strong. Armorial bookplate of G. A. Hardy with motto "Fear one" to front pastedown. Stain to top margin of frontispiece and title page. Light scattered foxing and creasing to pages throughout. Occasional pencilled and inked annotations to pages, with newspaper clippings of "Lady Augusta Hamilton" pasted into anonymous title page and to her initials at end of preface, along with a relevant newspaper clipping from 1877 pasted in to rear flyleaf.

The author identifies that 'the superior force of the male is rather muscular that internal'.With illustrated frontispiece and vignette title page illustration.Tipped in to the title page is a fourteen page pamphlet featuring the introduction to the 1822 edition in facsimile handwriting. Tipped in to page 134 is a newspaper clipping, dated 1899, concerning abuses of marriage laws in Italy.To the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of John Holden. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. In a quarter cloth binding, with paper covered board. Rebacked, with original boards retained and contemporary cloth spine label laid down. Spine label detaching to perimeters. Rubbing to boards, with losses to the paper at extremities. A little spotting and foxing, mainly to title-page, blank top corner of title-page repaired. The second e…dition of this compilation, somewhat fishily attributed to ?Lady Augusta Hamilton? in the first edition of 1822, published by John Bumpus (and while no name appears on the title-page of this printing, the preface is signed ?A.H.?). The absence of a plausible lady of that name in the historical record and the strong resemblance of the title and contents to Theophilus Moore?s ?Marriage Customs, Modes of Courtship, and Singular Propensities of the Various Nations of the Universe? (1814, also pub. Bumpus) suggests something of a hack job, and one candidate suggests herself: Olivia Serres, the English painter, novelist, and imposter. Serres is known to have befriended Lady Anne Hamilton, lady-in-waiting to Queen Caroline, and used her name to expand a scandalous 1830s account of the royal court started by Lady Anne herself. Identification based on a similar nom-de-plume, adopted a decade earlier for less-than-upfront ?authorship? at a time when Serres was trying to pass herself off as the daughter of the Duke of Cumberland while in debtor?s prison, seems tenuous but plausible.
