Hardcover. Explore matrimonial traditions both ancient and modern across nearly every continent in this early 19th century study by Lady Marianna Augusta Hamilton (1805-1892), who here examines not only marriage customs, but their meaning for the legal status of women. As the wife of Sir James John Hamilton, Baronet (1802-1876), Lady Augusta Hamilton may well have traveled with her husband during his ample and active military service, but for this study she also "collected from the labors of enlightened travelers and navigators," as she writes in her preface, including Lady Mary Wortley Montague in Turkey and Lewis and Clark in North America. This 1824 printing comes illustrated in a copperplate engraved frontispiece of the "Spanish Custom of Serenading" and a title page vignette of a "Marriage Ceremony in Mexico"-extra-illustrated with an 1877 newspaper comic depicting an elderly couple at the altar by Sir John Gilbert and the text "Never too late to mend," pasted in by a previous owner, who also added the author's name in newspaper clippings to the anonymous title page and merely initialed preface, as well as occasional hand-annotations to the text, including a couple of quotes from other works such as John Lubbock's Origin of Civilisation and the Primitive Condition of Man (1867). This is a presentable 1824 edition of a fascinating proto-feminist tour of the world through marriage ceremonies, with clues to its reception left by a later 19th century reader. Geographical subjects include: Turkey, Greece, Russia, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Great Britain, Greenland and Iceland, Persia, Armenia, Thailand, India, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Tartary, Arabia, Sumatra, Sri Lanka, Java, the Mariana Islands, Indonesia, Borneo, the Philippines, Japan, Venezuela, the indigenous Tlaxcaltec people of Mexico, the Caribbean, California, Guyana, Brazil, Paraguay, El Salvador, the South Seas, and more. 8 5/8" X 5 1/4". viii, 400pp. Presents nicely in protective archival jacket. Halfbound in calfskin, decoratively gilt-stamped to spine and lettered in gilt over a red leather title label, with marbled paper over boards and matching marbled edges. Rather heavy wear to binding, with hard rubbing and ringstains to boards, corners bumped and split, with boards exposed, chipping to head and tial of spine, and wear to exterior hinges. Inner hinges cracked at gutters of endpapers; binding remains quite firm and sound and text block strong. Armorial bookplate of G. A. Hardy with motto "Fear one" to front pastedown. Stain to top margin of frontispiece and title page. Light scattered foxing and creasing to pages throughout. Occasional pencilled and inked annotations to pages, with newspaper clippings of "Lady Augusta Hamilton" pasted into anonymous title page and to her initials at end of preface, along with a relevant newspaper clipping from 1877 pasted in to rear flyleaf.

Underground Books, ABAA is an online rare and antiquarian bookshop, founded in 2011 as a brick and mortar general bookstore of the same name in downtown Carrollton, Georgia, which is now operated by out former store manager as The Underground Bookshop. Co-owners Josh Niesse and Megan Bell met in 2011, just 10 days or so after Josh opened the doors of Underground Books, literally underground, several steps below street level in a 100-year-old basement in our historic downtown. Megan, an English student at the University of West Georgia, walked in, fell down the rabbit hole, and never left! Reader, we married in May of 2014, under the book arch that now resides at the bookshop. We are both proud alumni of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS), and Megan additionally of Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and of the ABAA Women’s Initiative Mentorship Program. Like many booksellers with open brick-and-mortar stores, we are passionate generalists, but our specialties are in decorative publisher's cloth bindings; fairy tales, folklore, and mythology; popular science and natural history; the occult; and fine press books.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Underground Books, ABAA, Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.

Shipping terms

Orders will ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required. If you are not satisfied for any reason you may return your book for a full refund, and if the error is ours, we will pay return shipping.
