Giocando con le regole del patto tra narratore, personaggio e lettore, La Chiusa prende un'esistenza fittizia e anodina, per quanto emblematica, un personaggio da romanzo - Ulisse Orsini - e ci invita a osservarlo da vicino: un soggetto improduttivo, in… esubero, ossessionato dalla propria sensazione di illegittimità. Uno che ha perso il lavoro e si rintana in casa, riducendosi a sgattaiolare sul pianerottolo per non incontrare i rispettabili condomini. Lo colloca in una metropoli nei primi anni Duemila, riconoscibile eppure fantastica, un cantiere interminato, coerente solo nella propria vocazione di «città della moda e degli eventi»; e lo segue nella sua tragicomica odissea urbana, attraverso paradossali ambulatori e ospedali simili a penitenziari, per vie ridotte a scarni residui dello sfruttamento economico, finché giunge - in mutande e con una valigia piena di biancheria - in una discarica dell'hinterland. Qui, nel cimitero delle macchine, tra i reietti accampati in mezzo a rottami e carcasse d'auto, Ulisse conosce Lazzaro Lanza, un imbianchino con aspirazioni messianiche, che lo trascina nelle azioni del suo movimento rivoluzionario (e nei suoi lavori di tinteggiatura). Il sardonico avvicendarsi di sipari architettato dall'autore rivela tutta l'assurdità del mondo contemporaneo e registra l'inesausto stato di tensione tra l'insostenibilità del reale e la fuga nell'immaginazione. Una tensione che ingabbia Ulisse e gli altri personaggi del romanzo, facendone le nostre grottesche controfigure. Libro.
