Add to basket12mo, pp. [iv], 380; title page vignette and engraved head- and tail-pieces; contemporary full catspaw calf, spine richly gilt, gilt-lettered spine label; a fine copy. First separate edition of Mably's treatise on the study of history, which had first been published in 1775 as part of the Cours d'Étude pour l'Instruction du Prin…ce de Parme, prepared by Mably's brother Condillac. In the first half Mably gives a general introduction to historical study and stresses its importance in the education of future rulers. In a direct address to the prince of Parma he maintains that true political and legal equality needs to be based on economic equality. The second and more substantial part is devoted to an analysis of recent political developments in European countries. In an analysis of contemporary reforms and revolutions, Mably's perceptive comments on Poland and Sweden are particularly noteworthy. He ends on a moral and didactic note, exhorting the future ruler to the separation of legislative and executive powers, political reforms, and a moderate government. Cioranescu 41183.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Small 8vo. 1 f., 213 pp. An exceptionally nice copy of this early Analysis of United States Government & Legal System. FIRST EDITION. The work is a collection of four letters from Mably to John Adams, written in the summer of 1783. The first letter is a general commentary on the le…gal system of the United States. In the second, Mably discusses the laws of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Georgia. In the third he argues that high-ranking government officials should not be paid, that the United States would be better if it had a single religion, and that Supreme Court justices should not be given an indefinite term of office. In the final letter, Mably points out dangers to the new republic, and suggests that the powers of the Congress need to be increased. Howes M5: noting an English translation of 1784 and a Dutch translation of 1785. Not in Sabin. Rich I, 37. See also JCB III, ii, 231, the English translation of London, 1784, with a lengthy quote from Rich.

(cf Encyclopaedia Universalis).
