Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition glossy blue and white illustrated oversized boards contained in a fine condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Welcome; History; Thank You; and Index. Profusely illustrated with color photographs and over 120 Black Dog recipes. The upper rear jacket spine edge has a tiny repaired closed tear; the jacket is otherwise in as new condition. "The first cookbook ever from The Black Dog will enable you to take home a delectable piece of Martha's Vineyard. Here are the best recipes from the summertime menu of a true American institution. The Black Dog's story began in 1971 on the beach in Vineyard Haven harbor when Captain Bob Douglas opened an eighty-eight-seat restaurant named for his beloved black dog. It was called a tavern despite the fact that Vineyard Haven is a "dry" town. Over the past thirty years, The Black Dog Tavern has grown from a small island haunt to a nationally renowned restaurant. Today no trip to the Vineyard by presidents, movie stars, or the rest of us is complete without a meal at The Black Dog. To start a summer's day, tourists and islanders alike line up for hours for The Black Doug's bountiful breakfasts. Now you can make these same meals at home: the spicy Huey, Louie, Andouille omelet or glorious Banana-Blueberry Pancakes. Lunch is equally popular at the Tavern, and you can enjoy the famed Quahog Chowder, a New England classic, or their equally delicious, though more exotic, Hot and Sour Soup. The Black Dog's chefs will teach you how to prepare classic New England starters like Stuffed Quahogs and even how to open a clam with no fuss. Dinner choices at The Black Dog always include delectable seafood preparations, but there are many other choices, too, like Crunchy Pecan Chicken with Lemon Ginger Sauce and Southwestern Rubbed Strip Steak. Stir Fried Zucchini with Spicy Peanut Sauce takes advantage of summer bounty, while Fudge Bottom Pie makes an irresistible dessert with a minimum of preparation. Filled with more than 120 recipes that celebrate fresh summer ingredients, along with colorful tales of the Vineyard and The Black Dog's adventurous crew, this book will enable you to enjoy a taste of summer on the Vineyard anytime." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Paperback. Condition: New. Joseph Nicolar's The Life and Traditions of the Red Man tells the story of his people from the first moments of creation to the earliest arrivals and eventual settlement of Europeans. Self-published by Nicolar in 1893, this is one of the few sustained narratives in English composed by a member of an Eastern Algonquian-speaking people during the nineteenth century. At a time when Native Americans' ability to exist as Natives was imperiled, Nicolar wrote his book in an urgent effort to pass on Penobscot cultural heritage to subsequent generations of the tribe and to reclaim Native Americans' right to self-representation. This extraordinary work weaves together stories of Penobscot history, precontact material culture, feats of shamanism, and ancient prophecies about the coming of the white man. An elder of the Penobscot Nation in Maine and the grandson of the Penobscots' most famous shaman-leader, Old John Neptune, Nicolar brought to his task a wealth of traditional knowledge. The Life and Traditions of the Red Man has not been widely available until now, largely because Nicolar passed away just a few months after the printing of the book was completed, and shortly afterwards most of the few hundred copies that had been printed were lost in a fire. This new edition has been prepared with the assistance of Nicolar's descendants and members of the Penobscot Nation. It includes a summary history of the tribe; an introduction that illuminates the book's narrative strategies, the aims of its author, and its key themes; and annotations providing historical context and explaining unfamiliar words and phrases. The book also contains a preface by Nicolar's grandson, Charles Norman Shay, and an afterword by Bonnie D. Newsom, former Director of the Penobscot Nation's Department of Cultural and Historic Preservation. The Life and Traditions of the Red Man is a remarkable narrative of Native American culture, spirituality, and literary daring.…

[From Prologue by Yitzhak Wald, Mayor of Kfar Saba] Our city Kfar Saba is well known as a place with a special image; its educational system, cultural complex, medical center and developed community life, make the city a model and an enriching and inspiring source for its inhabitants and for the inhabitants of the entire region. This book presents Kfar Saba from a different angle, showing its unique history and the development of its planning in order to assure a high quality of life to its inhabitants. The book is being published on the 40th anniversary of the State of Israel, 95 years after the purchase of the Kfar Saba lands, 85 years after the renovation cf the Jewish settlement, on the eve of the "Return to Zion". Yet Kfar Saba has existed for more than two millennia, since 86 B.C. (at least!). Many transformations have occurred since - to its name, its emplacement and its development. Joseph Kolodny, the City Architect, who shares a great part in designing the new Master Plan, has undertaken the task of telling the story of two millennia, through history, cartography, architecture and urbanism. This is an interesting review, which will contribute to recognizing our deep roots in this country and in this city.…
