Wie wurde die Revolution in der Rückschau bewertet? Unter diesen leitenden Fragestellungen zeichnen jüngere Historiker und Historikerinnen das politische Profil von sieben Abgeordneten in der Frankfurter Paulskirche nach, die im Frühjahr 1848 ihren Wohnsitz in Heidelberg hatten: Georg G. Gervinus, Robert von Mohl, Gustav Höfken, Karl Mittermaier, Karl Th. Welcker, Karl Hagen und Christian Kapp - allesamt Universitätslehrer. Die Konzentration der Fragestellung auf die parlamentarische Tätigkeit sowie die Berücksichtigung bisher unbeachteter Quelle erbringen neue Einsichten in die politische Arbeit in jener stürmischen Phase deutscher Geschichte; bei einigen der weniger bekannten Abgeordneten war gar Pionierarbeit zu leisten. Ein Beitrag über die Parteizeitung der gemäßigten Liberalen, die Deutsche Zeitung, an deren Gründung viele der in diesem Band vertretenen Persönlichkeiten maßgeblich beteiligt waren, rundet die Sammlung biographischer Untersuchungen ab. Sans s'arreter a des reponses dogmatiques, Aristote analyse les succes et les echecs de ces deux siecles ou les Grecs ont invente et experimente des cites et des democraties. Ses reponses sont parfois difficiles a interpreter. Veut-il un acces large ou etroit a la citoyennete Tient-il compte de la critique de l'esclavage dont il est un des seuls a nous informer? Dans des societes dechirees par le conflit entre les riches et les pauvres, comment pense-t-il eviter que la democratie conduise au pouvoir despotique des pauvres? Ces difficultes ont ete expliquees par la biographie d'Aristote - il aurait evolue de l'idealisme au realisme - ou par les hasards de la conservation et de la transmission des manuscrits. Selon l'auteur, elles manifestent plutot une pensee toujours au travail, une volonte de problematiser avec rigueur des questions que nous devons, dans un monde different, reprendre et prolonger a notre maniere.
