The 25 species of argasid ticks found in North America, Central America, and Cuba are represented by just four genera. The vast majority of the argasid species in the Americas belong to the genus Ornithodoros, which includes disease vectors of relapsing fever. Three species, Ornithodoros coriaceus, Ornithodoros nicollei, and Ornithodoros talaje, are vectors of relapsing fever in Mexico and Central and South America. The spinose ear tick, Otobius megnini, is one of the most recognizable argasid ticks, and the only one that regularly attacks humans, causing intense irritation in the ears of cattle. This book provides taxonomic keys to the three genera and 18 species of argasid ticks found in the United States as well as information on their hosts, distribution, and published records.
