Bound in beautiful publisher's p…ebbled cloth with beveled board edges and gilt decoration and lettering. All edges gilt. Dark teal/blue-green endpapers. Heavy quartos, 11.5" x 9". Complete in three volumes. Richly illustrated with dozens of fine steel-engraved plates and a few within text illustrations. ABOUT THE PRIMARY AUTHOR John Howard Hinton (1791 - 1873) was an English author, abolitionist and Baptist minister who published, along with many other works, The History and Topography of the United States of North America together with his brother Isaac Taylor Hinton (1799-1847). He is the father of surgeon James Hinton, grandfather of mathematician and science fiction author Charles Howard Hinton and ancestor of Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton. CONDITION REPORT The three volumes are in Very Good antiquarian condition for 150-year-old+ books. Exterior and binding: Cracked hinges, boards a bit loose. Rubbing to boards and extremities. Some fraying to spine tips and corners are worn. Some spots of dust. Cloth is colorful and unfaded and gilt is glossy. Interior: Pages are generally clean and bright and lightly to moderately toned. Plates are in beautiful condition, near fine to fine with white paper, just some marginal smudges or water spots on occasion. The images themselves are excellent. An occasional water spots/dampening to head of text block and plates. Former booksellers from multiple eras with writing in pencil on blank flyleaves. A few smudges and other signs of mostly light handling. All in all, a very nice collectible set in much nicer shape than usually found. .
