Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Vol. 87, No. 4 from Poetry magazine. Wraps. Themed "First Appearance Number," it appears that all the contributors in this issue are making their first appearance in the magazine. Further notable because it includes Michael McClure's first publication in general, "2 for Theodore Roethke." As his contributor note says, "Michael McClure is twenty-three years old and lives in San Francisco. His two poems this month mark his first publication anywhere." The famous Six Gallery Reading, during which Ginsberg read "Howl" for the first time, and Gary Snyder read "A Berry Feast," and Michael McClure read as the youngest, was only in October of the preceding year, 1955. In this issue William Carlos Williams also writes on Wallace Stevens. And much more. Very good with sunning to spine and some minor stains to rear cover. Front cover is clean, a nice shade of blue.

Eleven full sheet letterpress broadsides on Mohawk Vellum including one title sheet and one sheet stating this is Denise Levertov's copy "L" in the lettered edition of twenty. One narrow broadside sheet. Two spoiled full sheets of Raymond Carver Three Stories on dark yellow paper. Gray buckram boards, printed paper tag mounted on the cover, heavy cream paper pouch. Several of the broadsides are illustrated, and each is individually numbered in an edition limited to 150. Pouch has a three-inch tear at the top of the inside edge, else Fine. Levertov's poem illustrated by Elizabeth Quandt, Gallagher's by William Houston, Schevill's by H. Wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Uniformly printed, single sheets 10-1/2 x 17', folded three times making four panels per side, or, eight panels altogether. Each 'pamphlet' reproducing a work of art on the 'cover'; the rest of the panels on this side are uniformly designed and offer a description of the art with a biography of the artists; a bibliography for the poet; and a biography of the poet, with the colophon at the bottom. The recto contains poetry only, from five to eight poems depending on the poet. Each pamphlet with a little bit of age-toning, but altogether a better than Very Good set; lacking the publishers manila envelope. Rare thus. // Published by the Portland Art Museum for the Northwest Poetry Meetings held at the Museum July 9, 10, 11, and 12 in connection with the invitational exhibition, 'Paintings and Sculptures of the Pacific Northwest', which ran June 13 through August 9, 1959. Really quite a remarkable collection of Northwest poets; this group of 8 represents a full collection of those published, and includes the first separate publication of Richard Hugo, Carolyn Kizer, Carol Hall, John Haislip, and William Stafford (poetry). Artists include: Sally Haley; Margaret Tomkins; James McGarrell; Milton Wilson; Tony Mellara; Louis Bunce; Hilda Morris; and William Ivey.

Colophon states Number 5 of an edition limited to 537 of which the first 37 specially bound, decorated and signed by the poets, designer Diana Bower and printer Paul Hayden Duensing. Duensing (1928-2006) was a renowned type cutter, founder and printer who collaborated with Herman Zapf for twenty years. He began his career in 1950 in Seattle and moved to Michigan soon after this collection was printed.Now housed in a clear archival sleeve with an acid-free backing. Signed.
