First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1963 reprint of original book published in 1870 by Belknap and Bliss of Hartford, Connecticut. Abelard-Schuman, London, 1963. A well preserved First Edition copy in near Fine Condition of Kirwans account originally published in 1897. Dust Jacket in near Fine condition. Original cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Very few foxing spots on page tips. Illustrations. 219 pages clean and tight. 'Daniel Joseph Kirwan is what the reader may infer from his book is that he was a staunch Republican of Catholic-Irish extraction and London correspondent of the old New York World. The former is unimportant and the latter merely a sidelight in that we can reflect how lucky his paper was, for he was clearly a top-flight reporter and his picture of London a century ago is as vivid as when he wrote it. And what a picture it is! Whether with truly Republican relish he records the misdeeds of the Prince of Wales and of the "fast" set or whether he describes "Damnable Jack's" teeming lodging house-here is the London of our great-grandfathers. We follow Kirwan into fashionable places of entertainment and to the roughest, toughest of them all-the Royal Victoria Music Hall where the performances were different, so very different, from those put on the same site by the late and celebrated Old Vic Company. With him we visit Billingsgate, Petticoat Lane, Covent Garden and the notorious red-light area of the Haymarket, rub shoulders with swells or share a thieves' hot-pot in a night cellar, meet men of letters in Soho and treasure-hunters from the sewers and attend such diverse sporting events as Goodwood Races, an East End rat-pit and the Oxford v Harvard Boat Race of 1869.
