8vo, pp. [vi], 214, [26] indexes; with early MS notes in Latin and Greek on initial blank; foxed and somewhat discoloured throughout, but all present; rebound in modern tan half morocco over plain boards, spine with morocco label. First edition: there was a London edition the same year, which has exactly the same pagination - bu…t the errata are corrected in that edition, and besides, King (who was at this time Bishop of Derry) would be more likely to publish in Dublin than in London. The book is an attempt to deal with the problem of evil in the world, and in what way it serves God's purpose. De Origine Mali is the major philosophical work of William King (1650-1729), who was born in Antrim and studied at Trinity College, Dublin. He was able to navigate the squalls of 1689-91 with some difficulty, emerging as a reform-minded Bishop of Derry, who campaigned for improved clergy attendance and the primacy of the Church of Ireland, in a city which was largely Presbyterian. The present work must have burnished his credentials as an intellectual as well, and the following year he was appointed Archbishop of Dublin.
