First Edition
Written by Brigadier Kenneth Mears, CBE, Deputy Governor of H.M. Tower of London, this official guide provides a clear historical overview of the Crown Jewels and ceremonial regalia of the British monarchy. The volume introduces the principal objects preserved in the Jewel House, including St. Edward's Crown, the Imperial State Crown, the Sovereign's Sceptre and Orb, coronation rings and armills, and historic ceremonial garments. Illustrated throughout with high-quality color photographs and reproductions from the Royal Collection, the text explains the symbolism, ceremonial use, and historical development of these objects within the coronation traditions of the British monarchy. Photographs include coronation imagery of Queen Elizabeth II, royal orders and robes, and detailed images of regalia dating from the Restoration through the twentieth century. Published by the Department of the Environment, Royal Parks & Palaces, which administered the Tower of London and other royal historic sites during the period, the book was designed by 3D Communication, with colour origination by Gilchrist Brothers Ltd., and printed in England by Balding & Mansell Ltd. The copyright page notes © Crown Copyright 1986, with this copy clearly marked 'Reprinted 1988.' As typical of official Tower of London publications, the work served as an authoritative visitor guide to the Crown Jewels exhibition. Book Near Fine. Large-format softcover binding tight and square. Covers bright and well preserved with only minimal signs of handling. Interior pages clean, crisp, and unmarked. Color photographic plates vivid and well preserved throughout. Brigadier Kenneth Mears, CBE served as Deputy Governor of the Tower of London and was closely involved with the administration and interpretation of the Crown Jewels exhibition during the late twentieth century. Drawing on his role within the Tower's administration, he produced accessible historical guides explaining the regalia, ceremonial traditions, and history of the British monarchy for visitors to the Jewel House. His works remain widely used introductory references on the Crown Jewels.
