The chapters gather monographs serialized in National Geographic Magazine between 1913 and 1918, pairing behavioral observation w/ early field research on nesting habits, geographic range and the role of insect-eating species in farm ecology. Identification markers, habitats, feeding patterns and the relationship of each species to agricultural crops are set out species by species. Louis Agassiz Fuertes supplies 250 natural color species portraits, the standard American identification reference before Roger Tory Peterson's 1934 field guide. Monochrome wildlife photographs by George Shiras 3rd, a pioneer of night camera-trap work, run alongside them, w/ in-text migration maps by Wells W. Cooke charting continental flyways for species such as the scarlet tanager and bobolink. Fuertes painted from live birds in their habitats, and his portraits were printed on coated text leaves. Lead author Henry W. Henshaw directed the U.S. Biological Survey 1910-1916 and helped draft the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Frederic H. Kennard contributed a section on encouraging birds around the home.
