Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of diffraction, a phenomenon that occurs when light interacts with objects. Grounded in the foundational work of previous notable thinkers, the author masterfully expands on their ideas to provide comprehensive and innovative approaches to solving complex diffraction problems. Venturing beyond geometrical optics, the author taps into the power of advanced mathematical techniques to provide a novel and comprehensive approach to diffraction analysis. This unique perspective unveils the hidden complexities of light's interaction with various obstacles and surfaces. The insightful analysis presented within this volume has far-reaching implications, extending beyond the realm of pure theoretical exploration. This book has the potential to revolutionize practical applications in diverse fields, including optics, engineering, and telecommunications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, examining the theory of diffraction, describes radiation traveling along surface rays, their geodesics originating at the shadow boundary, continuously emitting diffracted rays that irradiate the shadow and enter the illuminated region. The author extends geometrical theory to longer wavelengths than could be treated with previous understanding. The theory has been tested by comparing its predictions with the exact solutions of diffraction problems involving objects of non-constant curvature. Extending the theory to encompass these objects, the author achieves predictions that coincide with the geometrical theory. Presenting diffraction theory in novel ways, the author provides results and concepts that will facilitate further research on radiation traveling along surface rays.

This book explores the geometrical theory of diffraction, a new theory of wave propagation that extends geometrical optics to predict the field produced at any point when a wave hits an opaque object of any shape. The theory was developed by the author and J. B. Keller and introduces new kinds of rays, called diffracted rays, in addition to the usual optical ones. Each of these diffracted rays consists of a straight line segment from the source to the body surface, a geodesic arc along the surface, and a straight line segment from the body to the observation point. The theory assigns a field value, which includes a phase and, in the electromagnetic case, a direction or polarization to each point on a ray. The total field at a point is postulated to be the sum of the fields on all rays which pass through the point. Using this theory, the author obtains an explicit expression for the field produced at any point when a wave hits a smooth convex opaque object. Applications of the geometrical theory of diffraction include diffraction by an aperture of any shape in a thin screen, diffraction in waveguides, and other problems. The theory has also been applied to diffraction by rough surfaces and to scattering of acoustic and electromagnetic waves by randomly distributed particles. The book also includes analyzes of diffraction by circular cylinders and spheres, demonstrating how the theory can be used to solve diffraction problems involving objects of special shape. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students in the fields of applied mathematics, physics, and engineering who are interested in the theory of diffraction and its applications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
