Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Dr. Kear, Assistant Director of the Wildfowl Trust and Curator of its Martin Mere Reserve, and Professor Andrew Berger of the University of Hawaii, have written a timely and absorbing account of the recent history of the Hawaiian Goose, or Nene, its descent to near extinction, its eleventh hour rescue and current restoration to the wild. The species declined from an estimated population of 25,000 in Hawaii in the 18th century to less than fifty birds in the 1940s. Today, thanks largely to the extended breeding programs at Slimbridge and Pohakuloa, there are probably more than 2000 Hawaiian Geese in the world. The achievement is justly applauded and well-known, but whether this impressive experiment in conservation has been truly successful will not be clear until it becomes evident that the released birds can maintain a breeding population in the wild. As the authors explain, the outcome is far from predictable. The causes which led to the species' decline and the hazards and difficulties faced by the reintroduced population are discussed at length, but the core of the book is the propagation program at Slimbridge and Pohakuloa, and the problems and successes they brought during many years of patient work.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Winner, Canadian Jewish Literary Awards (Jewish Thought and Culture)What Im saying Im painting, in effect . . . is the terror and beauty of life. Mashel Teitelbaum Mashel Teitelbaums work often appears to be born out of creative tension between substance and void, between will and world, between natural beauty and existential terror. The son of Jewish immigrants, Teitelbaum grew up during a period that saw the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the Holocaust before honing his voice under the likes of Clyfford Still, Ad Reinhardt, and Max Beckmann. A painter, poet, screenwriter, and novelist, Teitelbaum created works of art that were always arresting, even as they ranged from landscapes to portraits, from figurative to abstract, from modernism to expressionism. Like his life, his art was characterized by an honesty of self-expression, a creative integrity, and a desire to speak truth to power, often placing him in conflict with the establishment. Mashel Teitelbaum: Terror and Beauty is a magnificent volume, featuring more than 250 images, including more than 200 reproductions of artwork from the full scope of Teitelbaums career, as well as essays and reflections on his life and work from artists, curators, and friends. Its a fitting tribute to the work of one of Canadas most talented and influential artistic outsiders.
