With a very small green label affixed to the front pastedown: Macniven & Wallace, [booksellers] Edinburgh. Laid in is a manuscript note from C, E. Baker, 8/30/1885, presenting this book to the Revd. Armstrong Black, August 29th, 1885. Very good. Though the binding is not signed, it is a handsome Victorian binding, well preserved, with the lovely decoratively stamped endsheets. Macniven & Wallace was a bookseller in Edinburgh. They may have commissioned this binding. / The artist for the plates, Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) was a German painter, noted mainly as a muralist, but also as a book illustrator. He is associated with the Dusseldorf school of painting.

Quarter Vellum. Condition: Very Good. von Kaulbach, Wilhelm (illustrator). First Edition. No date but this is the first printing of this translation from 1925 in the Broadway Translations series. The corners of the beige boards are a little bumped and slightly rubbed. The Vellum spine has a little edge rubbing and fading with the title label on the spine a little damaged at the edges with slight fading to the gold title lettering. Top of page edges browned with light spotting. Previous owner's 1967 book plate to front pastedown but the marbled endpapers are otherwise unmarked. Earlier' owner's initials in ink to reverse of front free endpaper. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Contains an introduction by William Rose, Caxton's text of The History of Reynard the Fox modernized by William Swan Stallybrass, Physiologus translated with an introduction by James Carlill, a Glossarial Index and Notes to Reynard by Stallybrass and illustrations by Kaulbach. No jacket.

Leather. Condition: Very Good. A nice copy with some rubbing along the spine extremities. About 9" x 7", there is a slight waviness to the pages - caused by the binding style, not water damage.
