Curated by art historian Susana Torruella Leval, the volume gives a critical reappraisal of Ludins's seven-decade career, surveying his allegorical landscapes, political satires and expressive figurative drawings. The text places Ludins within the cultural milieu of the Woodstock Maverick art colony, documenting his early training at the Art Students League, his leadership of the Ulster County WPA Federal Art Program from 1937 to 1939, his service with the American Red Cross in the Pacific during World War II, and his twenty-year tenure as professor of painting at the University of Iowa from 1948 to 1969. Color plates of major paintings, monochrome ink studies and archival photographs accompany critical essays by Avis Berman, Tom Wolf, Judith Small Nash and estate executor Peter R. Jones, analyzing Ludins's synthesis of American Social Realism, Magic Realism and allegorical fantasy.
