Author of Philosophy for Young Thinkers, Hester advocated using philosophical discussion to strengthen students' reasoning skills and moral development, making this volume an early example of inquiry-based ethics education. He earned a B.A. in Social Sciences from Lenoir-Rhyne College (1961), a B.D. and Th.M. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1964, 1967) and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Georgia (1973), where he served as a teaching assistant in philosophy and a research assistant with the Georgia Studies of Creative Behavior.
