He later left the medical profession and became a viticulturist and settled near Redlands, California. Stillman's Gold Rush Letters span the period from August 15, 1849 to October 19, 1850. In this timeframe of a little over a year, Stillman vividly recounts the many events he witnessed and experienced in California. Among the events and subjects he writes about are the city of Sacramento, traveling on the Sacramento River, seeing the Marysville Buttes, the natural beauty of California, mining camp life, the hopes and destitution of many gold seekers, interactions with Indigenous Peoples, operating a hospital in Sacramento (possibly the first in the city), treating patients at the hospital, the calamitous Sacramento flood of January 1850, the Sacramento squatters' riots in summer 1850, and California being admitted as a state in the Union. Stillman recounts the arduous 194-day journey he and ninety-six other passengers had taken aboard the ship Pacific from New York to San Francisco. He writes of the unpredictable and, at times, unrelenting and dangerous weather, passengers struggling with seasickness, an abusive captain who withheld food and medical aid from passengers, and generally miserable conditions on board during their journey. However, Stillman also notes moments of joy and levity such as seeing rare fish and visiting scenic locales in South America. Foreword by Kenneth M. Johnson. Notably, Johnson writes that there was only one woman, a ship owner's wife, on board during the journey and that the average age of the passengers was only 26 years old. The PRU aircraft were stripped of all non-essential equipment to increase their performance, because speed and height was their only protection as the aircraft's guns were among those items that were removed.In this light-hearted reminiscence, Ken Johnson relives his training and transfer to an operational unit, but not the one he had expected. He had asked if he could fly Spitfires. He was granted that request, only to find himself joining a rare band of flyers who took to the skies alone, and who flew in broad daylight to photograph enemy installations with no radios and no armament.
