Binding is chipped at head and tail of spine and has general scuffing and wear, but is still very firm. The missing plates are of Essington Mill; Bridge, Old Coach Road, Tettenhall; and Codsall. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Textured pale covers with green image of Ireland surrounded by swirls of silver. Green patterned borders to top and bottom. Titles in gilt to front and to spine. Scuff to lower border, resulting in some loss to the pattern. Boards generally marked and a little discoloured. Gutters scuffed, with some surface loss. Small indented scratch to rear board. Binding tight. Light toning to pastedowns and endpapers. Faint pencil marks to the reverse of ffep. Inscribed and signed by the author to the half-title. Hand-written and signed letter (dated February 1896) by the author to a friend, stating the book to be a gift in advance of its publication, loosely inserted. Contents very bright with minimal wear or marking. Two silk auto lithograph plates by John Fullwood. 109pp including appendix. An unusual late Victorian book, with the initial theme being a love story but also about the spirit of Ireland. A curiosity of the text is the final chapter, which contains predictions for political and social management of Ireland, which is in many ways the key purpose of the book. Maurice Grindon was the pseudonym of William Henry Robinson, a Walsall publisher and a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. John Fullwood was a Birmingham artist of note and presumably moved in the same circles as William Robinson. The book was published by Simpkin Marshall in London but also by Robinson himself, at his Steam Printing Works, Walsall. More details available on request. (Ud3). John Fullwood (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
