In main directory,divided by letters, with indented side letter tabs, A at the top, stepping down to Z, at the lower edge, the letters printed on the paper at which the particular letter's listings commence. When on thin sheets, mostly but not always colored sheets, interspersed in body of the Directory, the ad pages aren't counted in the pagination, but in an extended ad section after the longest paginated piece, the pages are paginated, while the final five pages of content, all ads, are again unpaginated. Small ads are also to be found with some regularity in the directory proper -- these ads are like classified ads that similarly broke up the monotony of telephone books in more recent times. Many of the larger ads, such as those on the unpaginated sheets, come illustrated, usually small, but a few essentially full page. These sheets, with one exception, are printed on both sides. The directory is scarce, with only two institutional holdings of the book, listed on OCLC First Search, and few even of a microfiche version. (Neither the NYPL nor the Historical Society come up on OCLC, and a search of their online catalogue produced no listing, although the Historical Society had a much later year of the Trow directory. That said, we think it isn't unlikely that the Public Library has a copy which eluded the parameters of our searches. Regardless, we stand by our judgment of scarcity.) Lacking title leaf, which was part of pagination. One leaf, pp. 623/624 and leaf with the "Mc" tab, with a large chip reattached with archival tape, with no loss of content. Red buckram cloth of binding shows wear, with frayed threads, areas of color loss, a few scratches, general wear. Paper spine label with small chip, discoloration, abrasions.
