Ninety miles from Florida, Cuba was America's playground, a haven for gangsters, a pawn in our foreign policy. And then, on January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro toppled the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and changed both the face of Cuba and the political landscape of the Western Hemisphere. It was a revolution that would serve as a model for guerrilla actions throughout the 1960s; its leaders, Castro and Che Guevara, would become charismatic heroes to a generation; and its political repercussions would lead us to the brink of war. But what actually happened in December 1958? What was it like to be in Cuba during those historic days? After interviewing more than 200 people~including Fidel Castro~and examining previously classified U.S. State Department documents, John Dorschner and Roberto Fabricio have written the first comprehensive account of the Cuban Revolution. The Winds of December takes us from the rebel camps of Oriente to the glittering nightlife of Havana, as Castro's forces drive toward the capital in those dramatic last days when ''the hours seemed like minutes." Here are the rebel troops, often still teenagers, who would soon be camping out in the Presidential Palace; Batista, quietly planning an ignominious exit; General Cantillo, the only figure trusted by both sides and consequently doomed to be trusted by neither, feverishly seeking a solution that would avert a bloodbath; U.S. Ambassador Smith, who learns over a hand of bridge at the country club that Washington has sent a secret emissary to Batista; Batista's New Year's Eve guests, who are told to leave the country: after the party (and their subsequent race to the airport); Fidel Castro, who alone has a vision of a new Cuba to emerge from the fighting; and countless individual stories. This is popular history at its most exciting~a solid, exhaustively researched historical account, written with the drama and narrative drive of a great novel.

Index. Some page soiling. DJ has wear, soiling, and creased flap. John Dorschner was a longtime reporter in Miami and was also a legend for his work at Tropic magazine, a post that offered him a front row seat to some of Miami's most wonderful and infamous moments. Along the way, he has written stories from Haiti and Cuba, worked as a substitute teacher so he could write about the school system from within (deciding in the end that the kids would "eat me alive") and scored a 5 ½ hour interview with Fidel Castro. He co-authored a Cuba history book, The Winds of December. Three of his Herald articles have appeared in college textbooks on writing. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Romania in 2001. Won two National Headliner Awards, a Green Eyeshade Award and a host of others. Roberto Fabricio started as a copy boy and obituary writer at The Miami Herald and went on to be a reporter, columnist and editorial writer in the English language Miami Herald. He co-authored a book, The Winds of December. He later joined The Sun-Sentinel as foreign editor and senior correspondent for ten years, covering the fall of communism in Central Europe, the Middle East and Israel, the return to democracy in Chile, the "Contra" war in Nicaragua and the conflict in the Balkans, among other stories.

Profusely illustrated with color photographs and Hurricane Map: Landfall August 24, 1992, 4:55 A.M. "In the early morning hours of August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew slammed into South Florida. This was The Big One that experts had been warning about - a monster storm hitting a large urban area." - excerpt from the rear outer cover. "Overnight the face of our community was transformed. So much was swept away by the fury and destruction that was Hurricane Andrew. But Hurricane Andrew could not - can not - destroy the spirit of our community . Amidst the anguish and the pain, against great odds, the people of South Florida (and especially Dade County and Greater Miami) have shown their courage and their determination to triumph over the greatest natural disaster to befall this nation. The Big One is a tribute to the people of this community - to those who have been hurt, and to those who have helped. Not infrequently they are the same people. We salute the people of our community.
