Add to basketFirst edition thus, one of 500 copies printed. Publisher's original light brown cloth with titles in gilt to the spine and a gilt scaramouche to the upper board designed by Aubrey Beardsley. Fore-edge and bottom edge untrimmed. Illustrated with a black and white frontispiece and title page vignette by Aubrey Beardsley. Arts and Crafts Movement style bookplate of William S. Argent designed by Henry Ospovat to the front pastedown. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little toning to the spine and rubbing to the boards. The contents with two old tape marks to the front and rear endpaper and toning to the page edges are otherwise in good order and clean throughout. A nice example. The first collected edition of Davidson's earliest published works, with a wonderful frontispiece by Beardsley in his inimitable Aesthetic Movement style. A lovely copy, especially with the addition of an attractive and uncommon Henry Ospovat designed bookplate. Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is an unusual association copy from the estate of Martin Secker, publisher (of Secker and Warburg), purchased by an intermediary dealer who sold it on to The Petersfield Bookshop, Hampshire, who then sold it on to me. This is Graham Greene's personal copy, signed by him to the front endpaper. A write up of the book from a modern reprint reads: "Following in the tradition of Don Quixote, Earl Lavender is the story of two impecunious gentlemen who run away from their conventional lives, style themselves 'Earl Lavender' and 'Lord Brumm', and set out to preach the new creed of Evolution. Their hilarious romp across London leads them to all sorts of strange adventures, such as a wild hansom cab chase, a sojourn among a subterranean society of flagellants, and the discovery of the evolutionary 'Missing Link'. A key Decadent text, Earl Lavender (1895) is also Davidson's response to what he saw as some of the more ridiculous ideas and behaviours of the age." The book is in overall GOOD condition, with some rubbing to extremities and wear at corners and base of spine. The pages are mellowed and clean. The Aubrey Beardsley frontispiece is present. In all, this is an unusual association copy, connected to one of the great writers of the 20th Century. Excellent. AUBREY BEARDSLEY (illustrator). ASSOCIATION COPY. Book.…
