Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. With skilled historical and literary analysis, this book explores the deepening economic crisis in Great Britain in the early 19th century, examining the failures, cover-ups, and obfuscations of Prime Minister Henry Addington's administration. The author, with meticulous precision, rev…eals the extent to which the government propagated a false narrative of financial optimism, painting a rosy picture while the country's economy deteriorated sharply. The book masterfully presents a clear and accurate picture of this pivotal period, shedding light on the complexity of the financial crisis and setting the stage for the economic and political turmoil that would follow. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Acceptable. Fourth Edition. 119,397pp. This book has a few issues. The front cover is loose and the rear hinge is cracked. There is a bookplate inside the front cover. "L. Hays", I think it says, but the calligraphy is hard to read, and the "L" might be an "F". The boards are worn, as expected for a 221-yea…r-old book. There may be an advertising page missing at the end. The biggest issue, though, is visible in the pictures: the top right corner has been torn from four leaves at the beginning, affecting the second blank leaf, the title page, and the first two pages of the Preface. This affects the text on those pages. I have laid in re-printings of those pages taken from a reprinting of the 1802 edition. The only textual difference appears to be the word "INTRODUCTION" instead of "PREFACE". (63021).

This is Herries, ( then just a treasury clerk) attack on Cobbett's c…riticisms of The Governments expenditure. Herries rose up though hard work to become Chancellor of the Exchequer, Master of the Mint, Secretary at War, etc. etc. He also famously used the help of Nathan Mayer Rothschild to transfer money to British and allied army troops on the continent. In fact Rothschild's successful conclusion of these transfers was one of the foundations of Rothchild's English banking empire. 14.5 x 22.5cm. Approx.
