Seller: Antique Mall Books, Smyrna, GA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. 2nd Edition - Chatto and Windus (1861), Rebacked, preserving the original cloth boards. The binding is now tight and square with no cracks nor other issues are present. Light foxing throughout. xvi, 664 pages : illustrations ; 27 cm. . . . . . . This second edition is a substantial survey of the history and technique of wood engraving, authored by William Andrew Chatto with illustrations by John Jackson and an additional chapter contributed by Henry G. Bohn for the second edition. The volume traces the development of wood engraving from its earliest origins through various historical periods. Chatto?s narrative covers the antiquity and growth of the art, exploring its maturation and later decline, while also examining its technical aspects and practical methods. Jackson, the principal illustrator, was responsible for the engraving of most of the illustrations, having begun the work at his own risk and assembled a vast array of images to complement the text. The book, in its 2nd edition, clarified the respective contributions of each party after earlier ambiguity about proper attribution, with Bohn serving both as publisher and as a new contributor. The final structure presents a unified resource, where Chatto?s researched historical text is intricately supported by Jackson?s engravings and Bohn?s editorial and supplemental additions, resulting in a thorough and authoritative work on wood engraving in the nineteenth century. . . . . . . The attached bookplate on the inside front cover represents the personal ex-libris of Archibald Scott Napier, whose family was influential in Scotland and Britain, and whose arms followed the historic Napier lineage traditions.
