Slight discoloration on the lower part of the boards. The DJ is plain brown paper with slight wear at the corners and tips of the spine. Lower edge of the fron…t board has very small slit and very slight wear at the top corners. Discoloration where the DJ flaps meet the inside boards and endpapers. The inside pages are nice and look unmarked. Nice foldout color painting picture of Sutter's Fort at page 56 is intact and looks nice. Newspaper article on Gold Discovery Days laid in between a few blank pages at the back of the book. Browing on those pages where the article has laid. Kurtz 610. Howes S-1154.

Sohn des Johann Jakob, Vorarbeiters in der Heusler'schen Papiermühle, und der Christina Wilhelmine geb. Stober. 1826 Anna/Annette Dübeld, Tochter des Samuel, Wirts und Bäckermeisters. Schulen in Kandern und 1818-19 in Saint-Blaise. 1819-23 Lehre in der Thurneysen'schen Druckerei und Verlagsbuchhandlung in Basel, 1823-24 Commis in einer Tuchhandlung in Aarburg, 1824-28 Commis in Burgdorf. Unterleutnant der bern. Miliz. 1828 eigene Tuch- und Kurzwarenhandlung. Nach Konkurs im Mai 1834 Emigration in die USA, Zurücklassung seiner Familie. Erfolglose Handelstätigkeit in Missouri, 1838 auf dem Oregon-Trail nach Fort Vancouver (heute Portland, Oregon), Überfahrt nach Hawaii, Charter eines Segelschiffs, Handel in Alaska, 1839 Ankunft in der San Francisco Bay. Der mexikan. Gouverneur erlaubte S. die Ansiedlung im Sacramento-Tal, übergab ihm 1840 ca. 200 km2 Land, auf dem S. ein Fort errichtete, die Kolonie Neu-Helvetien gründete sowie Landwirtschaft und Handel mit wechselndem Erfolg betrieb, und erhob ihn 1844 zum Capitàn der Sacramento Kompanie. Ein spektakulärer Goldfund im Jan. 1848 löste eine Massenzuwanderung von Goldsuchern in die Kolonie aus, welche die gesellschaftl. Verhältnisse dort zerrüttete und zur Okkupation von vielen Besitzungen S.s führte. S. übertrug die Kolonie dem angereisten Sohn John A. (->), der um das Fort die Stadt Sacramento City plante, Land parzellierte und mit dem Ertrag die Schulden des Vaters tilgte. Dieser zog nach einem Streit die Geschäfte wieder an sich, erwies sich aber in Geschäftsdingen als ungeschickt. 1849 verkaufte S. sein Fort und zog sich auf die Hock-Farm am Feather River zurück, wo er sich der Landwirtschaft (u.a. Weinbau) widmete. Anfang 1850 traf seine Frau mit den jüngeren Kindern ein. Die bestehende Gesetzlosigkeit untergrub S.s Restitutionsbemühungen; die Übergriffe blieben ungeahndet. Der Aufbau eines rechtsstaatl. Rahmens v.a. nach dem Beitritt Kaliforniens zu den USA 1850 verwickelte S. in einen bis zum Tod dauernden Kampf um sein Land. Daneben übernahm er versch. Funktionen, u.a. als Abgeordneter im kaliforn. Verfassungsrat. Bei der Gouverneurswahl scheiterte er 1849. Ab 1846 US-Lieutenant of volunteers, wurde er 1853 Major General der kaliforn. Miliz. Nach der Vernichtung seiner Farm 1865 durch Brandstiftung zog S., immer noch auf eine Entschädigung durch die Bundesstaatsbehörden hoffend, nach Washington D.C. 1865-75 gewährte ihm Kalifornien eine Rente. 1871 liess er sich in Lititz nieder. Nach einer weiteren Vertagung des Entscheids über seine Forderungen durch den Kongress starb der gesundheitlich angeschlagene S. 1880 in einem Hotel in Washington.S. blieb eine kontrovers diskutierte Persönlichkeit. Für die einen galt er als wirtschaftl. Versager, der seine Fam. lange im Elend zurück liess. Für andere war er ein Pionier des Frontiermythos, was zahlreiche Strassennamen, andere Toponyme, das Museum Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, Gemälde, Filme sowie eine reichhaltige Literatur belegen. In der Schweiz wurde dieser Mythos v.a. aber 1925 durch Blaise Cendrars Erfolgsroman "L'or" verbreitet; weitere literar.
