Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. [10], 11-188. Chapter heads by William Gropper. Decorated endpapers. Bound in blue cloth with illustration stamped in white on front board, white lettering on spine. Light age-toning-soiling to edges of cloth, else quite… sharp. Former owner name of Paul Jordan Smith on the half-title. In the illustrated dust jacket that shows spine a tad faded, and a bit of edge-wear, notably to head and tail of spine. Price of $2.00 intact on front flap. Withal, a bright, presentable copy. Former owner Jordan-Smith was the American lecturer and scholar of English literature whose art movement, "Disumbrationism," was eventually revealed as a hoax. Wilbur Jordan Smith, his son, ran UCLA Special Collections from 1950s-1970 or so. The William Gropper dust jacket illustration conveys the tone of Digges' Cape Cod guide, depicting eponymous Bill astride an unhappy dolphin while waving his cowboy hat in glee. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. . William Gropper (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1969 MIT Press hardcover reprint of the long out-of-print 1937 edition. Sapphire blue cloth boards and spine with silver lettering. Except for the name of the former owner written on the first free endpaper, the book is immaculate. Pages are bright, tight, clean and unmarked. Binding is strong an…d sound. This colorful narrative written during the Depression is filled to the brim with history, shipwreck stories, tall tales, and local characters like the Witch of Billingsgate in Wellfleet and Josh Northrup of Orleans, the last municipal lamp lighter on the Cape. A wonderful book for anyone who has long loved the beauty and history of old Cape Cod. This was the first book published by author and political speechwriter, Josef Berger, who also wrote under the pen name Jeremiah Digges . Please see all images.
