Dieser Wandel ermöglichte bemerkenswerte Fortschritte auf allen gesellschaftlichen Ebenen in den letzten 200 Jahren, indem er die kognitiven Potenziale des Individuums freisetzte. Gleichzeitig begann eine Reflexion unserer Gefühle, die in der Literatur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts sowie in den Tiefenpsychologien des 20. Jahrhunderts sichtbar wurde. Dennoch blieben kollektive, projektive Gefühlsstrukturen weiterhin prägend, wie in den Kriegen des 20. Jahrhunderts und den vorherrschenden Ideologien. Ein Grund dafür ist, dass frühe, vorsprachliche Erlebnisse im Stammhirn auf einer tief unbewussten Ebene gespeichert sind. Neuere Entwicklungen in der Säuglingsforschung und Pränatalen Psychologie eröffnen nun die Möglichkeit, auch diese frühen Gefühle zu reflektieren und zu verantworten. Dies könnte den Umgang mit Gefühlen auf kollektiver Ebene grundlegend verändern, wie die zunehmende Durchsetzung demokratischer Strukturen zeigt. Die Reflexion und Verantwortung der Gefühle stellt einen bedeutenden Schritt in der Mentalitätsent.
