Erzählt wird die Geschichte der legendären Hamburger Kneipe "Die Palette" am Gänsemarkt, im legendären Gängeviertel, die Hubert Fichte 1968 in seinem gleichnamigen Roman verewigte und der nach Brigitte Kronauer "ein literarisches Gewitter, Donnerschlag und Erkenntnisblitz" zugleich war. Das Buch ist Resultat dreier Zugänge zu Fichte: Bandel betreibt eine Fichte-Webseite und hat mehrere Publikationen zu ihm veröffentlicht, L. O. Hempel hat ein 2004 ausgetrahltes Rundfunk-Feature zu Fichte verfasst und T. Janßen hat den Dokumentarfilm "Palette revisted" erstellt, der im September 2005 Premiere hatte. Im Buch kommen ausführlich die Zeitzeugen, aber auch Kulturwissenschaftler zu Wort, z.B. Michael Naura, Diedrich Diedrichsen, Daniel Dubbe und Harun Farocki, aber auch Jäcki und die anderen, die wir aus "Wolli Indienfahrer" kennen. Das Buch fängt sehr gut die damalige Szene um diese Kneipe ein, die ein Kristallisationspunkt der schulschwänzenden Oberschüler, Gammler, Aussteiger & Ausreisser, Gauner & Ganoven, Outlaws & Outdrops, prekären Seeleute & Hafenarbeiter, Kunststudenten und Beatniks war - "Die Palette" war ein Sammelbecken einer Bohemé und Subkultur, wie es sie davor und danach in Hamburg vermutlich nicht mehr gab. Die Atmosphäre wird gut spürbar, man meint fast, die Musicbox spielen zu hören - eine schöne Hommage an Fichte. "Kaum eine Kneipe war im Hamburg der Nachkriegszeit so verschrien und faszinierend gleichermaßen wie die Palette . Sie war Eldorado für Träumer und Traumatiserte. Hier konnten sich Jugendgruppen wie Beatnicks und Exis auflehnen gegen Erziehungsberechtigte, Alt-Nazis oder beides. Gegen den Persil-weißen Mantel des Vergessens und den sonntäglichen Sauerbraten.
