In 1974 Roy Sieber pointed out that, with a few exceptions, the people who were members of the Niger-Congo language family laid the foundations for the great African sculptural traditions south of the Sahara. However, the largest group of iconophile peoples in the Central Middle Belt of Nigeria is to be found in the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family.In this book of objects from private collections the author shows the great variety of the sculptures of the Middle Belt. This study mainly deals with wooden figures but also contains four wooden masks and three bronzes.Text in English and French.

Dans de précédentes études, Jan Strybol indiquait que, contrairement à ce qui est communément admis, la sculpture au nord du Nigéria prospérait. Des sculptures en bois y étaient partout présentes, à l'exception d'une partie du Grand Nord. Dans cette étude, l'auteur examine les traditions sculpturales d'un certain nombre de peupl…es du Nigéria central, plus précisément du plateau de Jos et de la vallée de la moyenne Bénoué jusqu'au cours supérieur de la rivière Taraba. Ces peuples peuvent être qualifiés de communautés non centralisées où des spécialistes à temps partiel produisaient surtout des objets d'art en matériaux périssables, contrairement aux royaumes centralisés du Sud (Ife, Bénin), où des spécialistes à temps plein réalisaient des ?uvres d'art sophistiquées à partir de matériaux durables (pierre, bronze, fer). Pour les amateurs d'art africain, le groupe ethnique le plus connu de la région de la moyenne Bénoué est celui des Mumuye. Depuis la fin du 20e siècle, la progression des religions universelles a entraîné la disparition accélérée des rituels traditionnels et de la sculpture mumuye tellement admirée en Europe et en Amérique. Dans son étude de 2018, l'auteur a tenté de donner un aperçu de cette sculpture sur bois. Dans une série de contributions, il examine à présent divers aspects de l'art des Mumuye. En plus de la sculpture sur bois, il prête attention aux objets en bronze, fer, terre cuite et autres matériaux. Jusqu'à présent, ces formes d'art sont restées dans l'ombre et ont presque totalement disparu. Enfin, l'auteur examine plus en détail quelques réalisations artistiques de certains groupes résiduels peu connus du territoire mumuye qui peuvent se vanter d'une riche tradition artistique.

Despite some field research our knowledge of the sacred among the Mumuye is still embryonic. In all these acephalic groups of a binary and antinomic nature, the complex va constitutes an extremely varied semantic field in which…certain aspects are accentuated depending on the circumstances. Religious power is linked to the strength contained in sacred objects, of which only the elders are the guardians. Moreover, this gerontocracy relies on a system of initiatory stages which one must pass to have access to the status of 'religious leader'. Geographically isolated, the Mumuye were able to resist the attacks of the Muslim invaders, the British colonial authority and the activities of the different Christian missions for a long time. As a result the Mumuye practised woodcarving until the beginning of our century. In 1970 Philip Fry published his essay on the statuary of the Mumuye of which the analysis of the endogenous network has so far lost nothing of its value. Basing himself on in situ observations, Jan Strybol attempted to analyse the exogenous network of this woodcarving. Thus he was able to document about forty figures and some masks and additionally to identify more than twenty-five Mumuye artists as well as a specific type of sculpture as being confined to the Mumuye Kpugbong group. During and after the Biafran war, hundreds of Mumuye sculptures were collected. Based on information gathered between 1970 and 1993 the author has demonstrated that a certain number of these works are not Mumuye but must be attributed to relic groups scattered in Mumuye territory. 0 g.
