Or, as the author says in his preface to this collection of essays, "I have attempted to be brief, clear, and cold-blooded, to make a number of positive contributions to the field of literary scholarship, and to present a consistent and no doubt unpoetical attitude toward poetry." The materials of Tradition and Poetic Structure fall into three groupings. First is a collection of essays varying from a basic statement upon poetry and tradition, through commanding essays on Statius, Chaucer, the Renaissance, to Wallace Stevens. The second part is a reprinting, entire, of Cunningham's Woe or Wonder: The Emotional Effect of Shakespearean Tragedy. Third is an appendix section of two brief and brilliant essays upon history and poetry and upon tragedy as essence.
