Or, as the author says in his preface to this collection of essays, "I have attempted to be brief, clear, and cold-blooded, to make a number of positive contributions to the field of literary scholarship, and to present a consistent and no doubt unpoetical attitude toward poetry." The materials of Tradition and Poetic Structure fall into three groupings.
