Published by Guildford: printed for the author and sold by Hawes Clarke and Collins. Fuller and Son. Mr. Faden. and Mr. Brett. London; J. Russell Guildford; and all other booksellers in Town and Country, 1776

8vo in fours, pp. [xiv], 108; with a list of subscribers on pp. [v]-[xii]; disbound. An unusual collection of Guildford-printed poetry of uncertain authorship, which is normally attributed to Charles Austen Jacques. Certainly, the author was clearly from the town, and among the subscribers is Charles Jacques, bookseller, of Chichester; but there are many other Chichester subscribers - so many, in fact, that one wonders why it was not printed there. I can find no other record of Charles Austen Jacques, but the tradition seems well established and he was very likely the son of the bookseller who took four copies. The clue to the Guildford connexion must be that, although from Chichester, the author seems to have attended Guildford Royal Grammar School, where he wrote a prologue for a performance of Richard III in December 1774 (here printed on pp. 51-3). Among his closest friends was one Daniel Foot (a poem addressed to him is on pp. 61-4), who also subscribed: young Daniel died in October 1777, just before a volume of his own poems appeared. There was a Charles Jacques (or Jaques) who is known to have been a clockmaker and watchmaker in Chichester in the later 18th century, and a man of that name - surely his son or even grandson - was alive in Chichester in 1851, but nothing else seems to be recorded of his poetical achievements. Among the subscribers is Richard Valpy (1754-1836), who was later to become the distinguished headmaster of Reading School: he had been at Guildford RGS too, almost certainly as a contemporary of the author's. Oddly enough, however, William Hayley - the most notable local patron of letters in Chichester - did not subscribe. Jackson p. 49. This is one of only three collections of original verse printed at Guildford in the 18th century, and very rare: ESTC locates just six copies in Britain and five elsewhere (Folger, Harvard, NYPL, Yale and Turnbull (Wellington, NZ)).
