Victorieux et scandaleusement meurtrier, l'affrontement de 1914-1918 demeure l'archétype de la guerre. En dépit de diversions géographiques accessoires, elle demeure la bataille d'arrêt type, menée sur le sol national. Un bras de fer. Le miracle de cette guerre n'est pas celui de la Marne, mais que deux générations de Français venus en majorité de la terre aient accepté de se sacrifier pour leurs sillons. Du jamais vu. Dans cette guerre artisanale, une Europe, non point vieillie mais bouillonnante d'entreprise, se détruit avec des moyens qui finissent par être industriels. La deuxième guerre mondiale, au contraire de la première, se présente pour la France sous forme d'une guerre en miettes: « Drôle de guerre » d'abord, puis défaite radicale du corps de bataille. Effondrement de l'État qui n'a jamais que l'armée qu'il mérite. Dans cette catastrophe brillent quelques héroïsmes trop vite occultés. C'est alors que commence l'émiettement. D'un côté l'Armistice de Vichy. C'est le long calvaire des prisonniers et des requis du travail, des compromissions de certains mais aussi la préservation, en Afrique du Nord, d'une Armée d'Afrique matrice d'une future renaissance des armes françaises en Tunisie, en Italie et en Provence. De l'autre, c'est l'appel à la résistance de la France Libre du général DE GAULLE et la réponse de Français venus se battre des quatre coins du monde aux côtés des Alliés. En France même, se cherchant à tâtons dans l'ombre, une admirable résistance s'affirme face à la répression, à la torture et à la déportation. Grâce à eux la France sera présente sera présente à la libération et à la victoire. Sur un strapontin mais présente. Le 6 août le tonnerre d'Hiroshima met fin à la guerre dans le Pacifique. Dans le même temps la France se précipite sur l'Indochine envahie puis livrée par le Japon au vietminh. Elle y réussit, dans un premier temps et malgré quelques aléas sanglants, une reprise de pied satisfaisante. Vite déçu par les atermoiements et les fluctuations de la diplomatie française, le vietminh prend conscience de lui-même et se bat comme un enragé, seul d'abord puis rapidement avec l'appui massif du « grand frère chinois. Pour les vrais combattants, l'Indochine fut, de tous, le combat le plus dur et le plus sanglant ou l'armée français aux moyens chichement comptés par une autorité politique défaillante sacrifia un corps expéditionnaire peu avare d'héroïsme mais bientôt exsangue. Dans le même temps, la France lâcha, non sans verser encore du sang, Madagascar, le Maroc et la Tunisie. C'est qu'il allait bientôt lui falloir consacrer toutes ses forces à son maintien en Algérie révoltée depuis novembre 1954 : « L'Algérie c'est la France ». Un million deux cent mille français dont la moitié de « souche » y vivent, y ont peiné, lui ont donné une infrastructure moderne. L'administration n'a pas suivi, qui fut brutale sous les militaires au XIX° siècle incohé.
