Paperback. Condition: Good. [4] p.: illustrations; 27 cm. Brown wrapper printed in black. An offprint from Archäologischer Anzeiger. Stamp of Dept. of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Bryn Mawr College, at foot of front wrapper. Handwritten call number at head of spine on front wrapper. Name written in red on front wrapper. The early work of Paul Jacobsthal (1880-1957) was focused on Greek vases. In 1935 he was forced to leave Germany because of the rise of the Nazis; after he settled in England he expanded his interests to Celtic art. This offprint, about blinders on horses as depicted in Roman art, is an outlier from both of those areas. Very scarce. In Good Condition: scraped along spine; front wrapper is detached; former owner markings on front wrapper; otherwise, clean and bright.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of how ancient Greek and Roman artists depicted the lightning held by the king of the gods. The author examines how they combined the artistic influences of the Orient with their own innovative spirit to create unique interpretations. It explores the evolution of the lightning's portrayal, starting from a simple zigzag line to a highly decorative and nature-inspired symbol. The book also discusses how the different forms of the lightning served both to express the power of the gods and to contribute to the overall narrative of Greek and Roman art. Through a meticulous analysis of numerous artistic works and literary references, the author makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of the artistic techniques and cultural significance of these ancient civilizations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
