EXCERPT: Preface - The authors of this textbook have adopted the standard arrangement of topics, beginning with trigonometric ratios of acute angles and proceeding to the general treatment of any angle. It is believed that this order of presentation best meets the needs of students taking a first course in trigonometry, and that it provides the soundest foundation for further study in any of the many fields of science in which trigonometry is applied. In the application of trigonometry to problems of a practical nature, emphasis has been placed on developing skill in trigonometric computation before assessing too closely the accuracy of computed results. To this end, only a brief consideration is made of significant figures in the early stages of the work. However, in the third chapter, two simple rules are introduced for recording results without exhibiting an unreasonable degree of accuracy.
