Nach wie vor lesenswertes Werk über die "Strukturen einer Kulturrevolution" - eigentlich sogar lesenswerter denn je, wird den Schulen doch immer mehr die Aufgabe einer sozialpolitischen Feuerwehr (bzw. eines sozialpolitischen Wunderheilers) zugeteilt, die sie nicht sein können. Auch am Mythos, Lernen und Bildung fände nur oder vor allem in der Schule statt, hat sich trotz inzwischer verbreiteter Postulate vom "lebenslangen Lernen" im Grunde wenig geändert. Eine weitere Ausgabe erschien 1972 schliesslich bei Rowohlt (Reinbek) u.d.T. "Schulen helfen nicht - Über das mythenbildende Ritual der Industriegesellschaft". Illich (1926-2002) war Philosoph, Kulturkritiker, vehementer Kritiker eines autoritären Schulsystems und auch sonst jedes Autoritarismus (u.a. im Gesundheitswesen und hinsichtlich von Expertengläubigkeit), er war im besten Sinne ein "Querdenker" (der Begriff hatte seinerzeit einen ausgesprochen positiven Beiklang für unabgängige Geister, bevor er seit der Corona-Pandemie aus durchsichtigen Gründen zu einer Beleidigung degradiert wurde, zu einem negativ gemeinten Etikett für jedwede vom autoritären gesellschaftlichen Konsens abweichende Überzeugung, einem Kill-Wort, das als Stigma Andersdenkende gesellschaftlich ausschließen sollte).
