Quite a lovely book with textured yellow endpapers and Coppings lovely colour illustrated plates. Harold Copping (1863 1932) was a British artist best known as an illustrator of biblical scenes. His 1910 book The Copping Bible illustrated by himself became a best-seller. His illustrations for non-religious books included Hammond's Hard Lines (1894), Miss Bobbie (1897), Millionaire (1898), A Queen Among Girls (1900), The Pilgrim's Progress (1903), Westward Ho! (1903), Grace Abounding (1905), Three School Chums (1907), Little Women (1912), Good Wives (1913), A Christmas Carol (1920) and Character Sketches from Boz (1924). He also illustrated the children's books by Mary Angela Dickens based on the novels of her grandfather, Charles Dickens.

An ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR illustration signed by Copping to the fly-leaf, depicting a shepherdess. Publisher's deluxe full vellum, with gilt titles and decoration to spine and upper. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Some spotting to deckle edges, and a very slight reading lean, otherwise a lovely crisp, clean copy. One silk tie detached, but still present; the other remains fully intact. Vellum remains clean and bright with minimal bowing, toning, marks etc. Near fine. A unique copy of this popular Southern American novel set in the slums of Louisville, Kentucky. Signed.
