Juni 1988 fand an der Technischen Hochschule Darmstadt unter der Schirmherrschaft von Professor Dr. Helmut Böhme eine Tagung zum dreihundertsten Gedenkja…hr der ersten Drucklegung der Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica von Isaac Newton statt. Ich war mit der Organisation und Durchführung betraut. Dank der Unterstützung vieler Kollegen entstand ein interessanter Zyklus von Vorlesungen zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der Mechanik, dessen Herausgabe in Buchform lohnenswert erschien. Der vorliegende Band umfasst ein Geleitwort von Herrn Böhme sowie vier Beiträge von anerkannten Wissenschaftshistorikern und Naturwissenschaftlern, die sich der Geschichte ihrer Fachgebiete widmen. Diese Beiträge beleuchten die Entstehungsgeschichte der Principia und deren Einfluss auf die Mechanik im 18. Jahrhundert. G. Böhmes Beitrag zu De Gravitatione zeigt auf, dass Newton mit diesem Manuskript die Principia schreiben und gleichzeitig die Prinzipien der Philosophie von Descartes widerlegen wollte. D. Speiser erläutert in seinem Aufsatz über die Grundlegung der Mechanik in Huygens' Horologium Oscillatorium und Newtons Principia, dass Newton in Huygens einen Vorläufer fand, der bereits Teile seiner grundlegenden Axiome vorwegnahm und somit zu deren Formulierung beitrug.
