This collection of Chinese landscape paintings profiles the work of prolific artist, Li Huayi--one of the most influential Chinese painters of the 20th century. Some view contemporary art and traditional art as alien entities facing each other across an unbridgeable divide. But what d…oes it mean to be a contemporary artist? Is it possible to be contemporary while working in a traditional manner? These questions as they relate to the contemporary scene in China are explored in this catalogue of a special exhibition featuring 34 large-scale paintings by Li Huayi, an artist born and raised in China, and currently residing in Shanghai and San Francisco. Many of the works in this exhibition could, on first view, be mistaken for traditional Chinese paintings such as those from the Northern Song dynasty (960-1126). On closer inspection, however, the viewer discovers the technical innovations and personal expression that the artist has brought to this tradition. For Li Huayi is expressly not an artist who is seeking to imitate or reproduce works from the past but rather one who uses tradition to create new works that speak to our time. Very nice, clean, like-new copy free of any marks.

Text block firmly bound in. With 39 numbered pages of matte paper. With 12 full-page plates depicting the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac; primary colors are charcoal against a bronze background but here and there with touches of peach, carmine and off-white. Introductory text; also includes a table of cyclical dates of the Chinese zodiac. An exceptionally clean copy inside and out. Either unread or very gently read. A Near Fine copy. 1 lb. 4 oz. All the zodiac "album leaf" paintings were exhibited 3 to 25 November 2011 at the Eskenazi gallery, scheduled to coincide with Asian Art in London. All save No. 4, the Rabbit, were for sale. Li Huayi [b. 1948] is a contemporary ink artist whose admiration for the monumental landscapes of the Northern Song dynasty along with his training in both traditional Chinese ink and Western art inspired him to create his own style of ink painting. He tends to integrate his contemporary perspective with features of traditional Chinese literati painting. In addition to the 2011 zodiac animals exhibition, Eskenazi also organized solo exhibitions for the artist in 2007, 2010 and 2014.
