Add to basketRebound. Condition: As New. No Jacket. A catalog that accompanied a traveling exhibit of paintings by Martha Simkins, a portrait and still life painter born in 1866. She was a painter whose work and career has been neglected for too long, and this exhibition sought to bring her back into the spotlight. In addition to being a pro…lific painter, she was also an art teacher. whose career spanned more than 80 years (she died in 1969). She lived and worked mainly in Dallas, TX. The exhibit toured various museums, primarily in the South (Thompson Gallery, Furman University, Greenville, SC; Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, GA; Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, Marietta, GA; & Irving Arts Center, Irvine, TX) during 2002 and 2003. The curator and organizer of the exhibit was Robert A. Horn. It was billed as the first true retrospective of her paintings. The catalog includes three scholarly essays: "An Introduction to her Life and Work" by Dr. Valerie Ann Leeds, "Cultivating a Regional Reputation" by Dr. Melina Kervandjian, and "Memories of Martha Simkins" by Roger E. Saunders. A detailed bibliography is also included and the whole catalogue is profusely illustrated with samples of her work in color and vintage b/w photographs. It appears as if the catalog may have originally been simply a soft cover catalog. However, this volume has been re-bound as a handsome hard cover book in blue buckram with dark blue leather on the spine and corners, with gilt gold accents. On the spine, the title is in gold gilt lettering on a maroon background. The book measures approx. 8" x 11" with 72 pages. There are also some additional blank pages that have been bound into the back of the book to probably create a more substantial volume. A handsome book that showcases a forgotten artist, and a volume that has been beautifully preserved and re-created. Additional shipping charges will apply for delivery outside the United States. In excellent condition. SALE PRICE.
